Yesterday I ran into a friend and his nine year old daughter, who I hadn’t seen for several weeks. Among other things, he asked me how my job at Bilingual Readers was going (lucky for me, I absolutely love my work!). I briefly told him that all was going well and we were very excited about launching our catalogue of books and games in October and added a few battle stories just so he wouldn’t think I spend my days playing instead of working. My friend’s daughter, however, wasn’t buying my story and asked me a very simple yet extremely important question for someone in my line of work: why do you like books so much? After a few moments of hesitation, I gave her a wry smile and sputtered off something along the lines of “books are very entertaining and you can learn a lot from them.” I’m afraid neither she nor I were all that convinced by my vague response.
So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately and asking myself the all important question: why do I love books so much? Once I gave it a bit of thought, I realized I could come up with a million reasons if I tried, but I thought I share just a few of them with you today:
1.- Books allow us to use our imaginations to transport us to new and exciting places.
2.- They help us learn about other cultures and ways of life.
3.- Books teach us new words and help us to express ourselves in new ways.
4.- We can share books with our family, friends and even people we don’t know. In this way, books bring people together.
5.- Reading is more than just entertainment– it’s also a lot of fun!
I’m very thankful to be able spend my days working on a project that helps children learn to love books as much as I do. I can only hope that this love of reading will come through in everything we do here at Bilingual Readers. Now it’s my turn to ask you the all important question your kids are going to come out with sooner or later, why do you love books so much?
